Do I Need a Professional Landscape Design?

NOVEMBER 19, 2024 . Jill Livingston

The landscape is often the first thing the public sees when viewing your home. A landscape can either add to or lessen its value. In fact, every dollar spent on a high-quality professional landscape can yield a 135% return or increase property values as much as 10% - 17%.

Besides your home’s market value, it’s equally important to ask yourself - how is your landscape adding value to your life? You pay for every inch of your property, but it’s surprising how many homeowners treat their outdoor environment as an afterthought.

Often homeowners dabble in do-it-yourself landscape projects only to be disappointed with the results despite how much money and time they invest. If you can relate, this might be the first indicator that you need a professional landscape design.

Things to Consider?

1.  Complexity of the Project

  • Simple Update or Refresh – If you’re looking at improving a small area or existing landscape bed this might be something you can do yourself or consult with a professional.

  • More Complex Design – If you’re considering extensive changes or a complete overhaul of your existing landscape, whether it be your entire property or just the front or backyard, a design is an essential roadmap for success. You wouldn’t build a house without a design…right?

 2.  How Much Does a Design Cost?

  • You’ve probably heard the expression “you get what you pay for.” If someone claims they don’t charge for design this is a huge red flag! A trained landscape designer or architect’s time is valuable and they will charge accordingly.

  • A design fee is charged by the hour or at a flat rate. Typically, a landscape architect or designer charges a flat rate when they are a seasoned expert. They can be confident from years of experience that they will not be undercharging for their time.

  • Basic Design:

    • Cost: $1,800 to $2,800

    • Description: Might include a basic layout for a small property area, plant selection, and some simple design elements, like paths, patios, or lawn areas.

  • Mid-Range Design:

    • Cost: $2,800 to $7,500

    • Description: Usually for a larger property area, a more detailed design that includes specific plantings, hardscaping (e.g., retaining walls, walkways), irrigation, and lighting.

  • High-End Design:

    • Cost: $7,500 to $13,750+

    • Description: This can include large-scale and/or more complex projects with multiple levels of hardscaping, water features, outdoor kitchens, swimming pools, and other construction elements.

3.  How Long Does It Take to Complete a Design?

  • The amount of time it takes to complete a design varies depending on the designer, their expertise and design backlog.

  • Depending on the size of your property and the length or complexity of your wish list, it’s recommended to start the design process at least a few months prior to the desired date of your completed project. For example, if you’re anxious to have your new landscape installed in the spring, secure a landscape architect or designer in the fall or winter of the previous year.

  • The best designers are in demand year-round! In fact, after designing for over two decades, I find that some of my most inspired designs happen during the fall and winter when my mind is less distracted by back-to-back deadlines and the busy landscape installation season.
